About the Role

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the Middle School Special Education Teacher provides legally mandated services to students with IEPs as well as at-risk interventions for students identified as needing additional support. This teacher works collaboratively in a co-teaching (ICT) model with general education content area teachers to ensure that students make measurable progress toward IEP goals and successfully access grade-level curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop IEP goals, monitor progress, and complete all required documentation for IEP process
• Attend IEP meetings, act as case manager, and advocate for students
• Co-plan and co-teach with general education content area teachers to deliver rigorous, standards-based, culturally relevant instruction
• Provide small-group and individualized instruction tailored to student needs
• Analyze data from ongoing formative and summative assessments to refine practices and drive student growth toward IEP goals
• Maintain strong classroom management aligned with schoolwide policies, ensuring a safe and respectful environment
• Build a classroom culture of inclusion, high academic expectations, and positive student relationships
• Grade student work, provide actionable feedback, and communicate progress effectively to students and families (via online portals, report cards, and other methods)
• Participate actively in professional development, grade-level and content teams, professional learning communities, and schoolwide initiatives
• Share best practices with colleagues and contribute to a collaborative professional culture

• New York State certification in Students with Disabilities, Grades 5–9 or 7–12 (required)
• Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s degree (preferred)
• Prior middle school teaching experience (required)
• Strong knowledge of IEP development, compliance, and instructional accommodations
• Deep belief in all students’ ability to meet high expectations with the right supports
• Collaborative, reflective, and committed to continuous improvement
