Job Description

We are seeking a part-time, independent contractor insurance underwriter for property and casualty insurance, primarily professional liability coverage (for hospitals and physicians), general liability and umbrella coverage for a small industrial captive insurance company. The insurance underwriter would be responsible for assessing the risk factors of potential clients and assisting in establishing coverage terms. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of risk analysis, the ability to analyze data and make informed decisions that ensure a balanced ratio of risk while enabling the company to provide insurance at a competitive price.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee, coordinate, prepare reports and any other requested information actuaries require.
  • Prepare Liability Underwriting Committee (UC) information on underwriting guidelines and rate recommendations. 
  • Present liability underwriting and rate recommendation reports.
  • Underwrite each renewal/new business proposal, prepare proposal and assist in delivery of renewals/new business as needed.
  • Ensure balance between mass and homogeneity of risks to achieve predictability of future results. 
  • Designate and prepare insurance premiums based upon informed judgment and competitor pricing.
  • Organize meetings with specialist to help determine risk assessment in unique circumstances. 
  • Assure that files and AMS System are properly documented with supporting documentation and rating sheets on any change.
  • Assist in the review and completion of prospect or renewal applications; assure that applications are sent to the appropriate markets for bids; negotiate pricing and coverages with underwriters when necessary; and assist account executives in the proposal or renewal presentation.
  • Respond to client’s request for information.
  • Maintain and update (when needed) written underwriting procedures.
  • Maintain detailed records of policies underwritten. 
  • Coordinate policy and coverage evaluations and comparisons.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable insurance laws and regulations. 
  • Assist in all other underwriting projects and services, as needed.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability Required

  • Ability to maintain efficient underwriting protocols, policies and procedures while assuring the accuracy and timeliness of proposals and renewals. Provide courteous and timely customer service. 
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and written) effectively with boards, clients and prospects with regard to gathering information for proposals or renewals and to answer any questions or respond to requests. 
  • Negotiation ability with outside insurance companies and brokers. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of data, agency systems, forms used and reports developed. 
  • Knowledge of insurance industry – specifically property and casualty, professional liability (physicians and hospitals) and general liability. 
  • Ability to use a computer and meet the normal demands of office work in general and travel by automobile.
  • Skill in problem solving, math reasoning, analytical skills and statistical skills. 
  • Excellent knowledge of insurance policies and ability to relate policy provisions to the loss exposures. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software and agency systems (AMS).
  • Ability to multitask and work toward multiple deadlines simultaneously. 
  • Strong customer service orientation. 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and related work experience. 
  • General lines and/or Property and Casualty license required. 
  • Industry designation or certification (i.e., Associate in Commercial Underwriting [AU]) preferred. 
  • Five or more years’ experience with property and casualty underwriting required.
