Organizational Development Director

Empowering Marginalized Asian Communities’ (EMAC) mission is to help build safe and thriving Southeast Asian communities within the larger Asian American and Pacific Islander diaspora. We seek to fulfill this mission through community advocacy and civic engagement, providing culturally relevant resources, and cultivating the development of social empowerment through the expression of our values: transformative justice, culturally rooted healing, communal resiliency, and collective collaboration.

Position Overview
The Organizational Development Director ensures our organization is healthy, strategic, and equipped to grow and thrive, both internally with staff and externally with the community we serve. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

We are a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by systemic challenges such as incarceration, deportation, violence, and trauma. We serve historically marginalized and underserved communities, with a focus on creating pathways to healing, empowerment, and stability. Given the nature of our work, we seek candidates who are not only deeply aware of the realities facing our community but who also bring a trauma-informed approach to their work. Applicants should have, or be willing to develop, a personal wellness or safety plan to support their own mental health and resilience while engaging in emotionally demanding environments.

Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel classified in this manner.   • Coaching & Professional Development: (40%)
    • Leads and coaches staff with regular professional development and goals through individual, team, and all-staff training and resources, including regular staff and organization evaluations.
  • Strategic Planning & Fundraising: (20%)
    • Leads in creating and implementing strategic plans, and ensures the development and fidelity of all EMAC program plans and implementation.
    • Leads in coalition decision-making.
    • Supports the economic sustainability of EMAC through supporting our large whole-staff fundraisers and leading at least one fundraiser individually (or in collaboration with another staff member(s).
  • Internal Policies, Culture, & Community: (22.5%)
    • Leads in the training and maintenance of staff Policies & Procedures.
    • Leads in cultivating and maintaining internal culture and community through regular activities, events, and internal organizational structures.
    • Leads in planning, strategy, and goals of the organizational staff and Board retreats (twice a year), including (but not limited to) surveys, agenda/program, retreat facilitators, and other major elements as needed.
    • Participate in regular reflection and evaluations as an organizer through 1x1’s with an immediate team leader as well as formal evaluations twice a year.
  • Operational Duties and Leadership: (15%)
    • Provide managerial support, leadership, 1x1 check-ins, and consultation on projects such as,
    • Individual deportation defense and campaign work
    • Stockton Cultural Wealth Project
    • Lead and participate in regular communications for the betterment of EMAC programs and the organization as a whole (emails, texts, phone calls, calendar, daily workflow, etc.)
    • Regularly schedule, attend, participate, facilitate, note take, and/or time keep any relevant meetings as needed.
  • Office Management: (2.5%)
    • Leads in the delegation of regular office cleaning based on assigned monthly responsibilities.
    • Leads in office space management, including (but not limited to) regular cleaning and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant field
  • At least five years of experience working in non-profit organizations
  • At least two or more years in a leadership role (ideally in a non-profit or mission-driven organization)
  • Experience leading strategic planning, learning and development programs, and staff and organizational development
  • Familiarity with nonprofit-specific dynamics (board governance, grant-funded environments, etc.)

  • Strong Interpersonal and Facilitation Skills - Builds trust and communicates effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. Skilled at leading workshops, coaching individuals, and facilitating group processes.
  • Analytical and Data-Informed - Gathers and interprets data (e.g., surveys, assessments) to guide decision-making. Uses insights to recommend actionable improvements.
  • Change Management Expertise - Understands how to guide an organization through transitions and challenges. Brings a calm, thoughtful presence when navigating sensitive shifts.
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence - Listens deeply and responds with understanding, especially in conflict or tension. Values and cultivates diverse perspectives and inclusive practices.
  • Experience with Organizational Development Tools - Familiar with tools like SWOT, coaching models, HR systems, and other professional development tools
  • Results-Oriented and Mission-Driven - Keeps our mission at the center while also focusing on measurable progress. Understands the nonprofit context and how to drive sustainable growth for our staff and organization.
  • Collaborative and Adaptable - Works across departments and levels; comfortable in dynamic, evolving settings. Open to feedback and iteration.
  • Commitment to Social Justice & Racial Equity - recognizes role of race, gender, and other identities in shaping health disparities, is driven to improve conditions, and proactively learns re: race, equity, and identity.
  • Excellent Communication Skills - Speaks clearly on behalf of the organization and advocates for/with community members. Communicates well with others, including sharing context and asking questions to understand others’ perspectives.
  • Issue Familiarity - Prior knowledge of or experience in Southeast Asian/A&PI community issues: transformative justice, re-entry support, immigration, and deportation defense.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • This position will work out of our EMAC office located in Stockton, California
  • Hybrid work schedule (determined by staff member and Executive Director)
  • Travelling locally, statewide, and/or nationally may be required, including overnight
  • Able to work individually and in a team environment
  • Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time, with reasonable accommodation
  • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard
  • Able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  • Able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in person, and be understood by others
  • Able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral directions

Employment Terms

  • This is a full-time position
  • This position is 32-40 hours per week
  • The salary range is $65,000 – $88,000, depending on experience
