Job Title: Mortgage Underwriter
Job Overview:
We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter to join our client in supporting critical loan assumption processes. This onsite, contract-to-hire role based near Trenton, NJ involves conducting thorough manual reviews of assumption packages and making informed credit decisions, while also mentoring processors and supporting compliance with investor and regulatory guidelines.
Work Schedule:
• Monday to Friday, normal business hours
Key Responsibilities of the Mortgage Underwriter:
• Perform manual underwriting of assumption files, including review of income, assets, credit, and supporting documents
• Ensure compliance with investor guidelines and applicable federal and state regulations
• Guide and support processors throughout the loan assumption process, providing training and escalation assistance
• Submit complete files for investor approval when necessary
• Conduct OFAC checks and complete post-closing updates in FHA Connection
• Respond to audit inquiries and collaborate across internal departments
• Maintain awareness of underwriting guideline changes and assist in implementation
• Communicate with business partners, vendors, and clients to resolve underwriting-related issues
• Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance team efficiency and compliance
Qualifications and Skills for the Mortgage Underwriter:
• High School Diploma or GED required
• 3–5 years of recent manual mortgage underwriting experience
• Experience with mortgage assumptions strongly preferred
• Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in Excel and document review tools
• Commitment to high-quality customer service and cross-functional collaboration
