Job Description

Job Purpose and Scope

The Merchandise Assistant is a self-starter, highly motivated individual that will support the Buyers and Assistant Buyers in providing information for monitoring of inventory productivity, and the analysis of vendor profitability while also providing efficient administrative support. Strong organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and multi-task with minimal supervision is required. The Merchandise Assistant is a developmental role in preparation of advancement to an Assistant Buyer opportunity.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists in monitoring industry trends and in evaluating competition. Provides data for the development of the merchandise strategy, including product selection and product and key item development.
  • Assists in setting up new items and updating existing items in internal database. Assists in entering and maintaining price changes in a timely manner. Monitors all permanent price changes to ensure stores have completed, following up where needed.
  • Responsible for entering and maintenance of purchase orders, working independently to track merchandise and troubleshoot shipping issues.
  • Prepares, maintains and updates weekly, monthly, seasonal sales reports on best/worst sellers, aged inventory, as well as vendor and class performance—to be provided to Buyers/team in a timely manner.
  • Executes returns to vendors as negotiated and necessary.
  • Ensures the resolution of data integrity (on hand) issues.
  • Maintain professional communication with executives within the Dillard’s organization and external vendors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with team members, executives, and vendors professionally.
  • A strong understanding of MS Office (especially Excel and Power Point) is essential.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply retail math concepts

  • The ability to learn and adapt to new software programs
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without compromising accuracy
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines effectively
  • Ability to identify challenges and provide innovative solutions to improve processes and drive results
  • Self-motivated and proactive approach to tasks and projects

Position Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Merchandising, Business, or a related field required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, preferred
