Our client is seeking to hire an experienced Underwriting Manager for a hybrid leadership role based in New York City. This individual will manage a team of underwriters and work closely across departments to support an innovative, tech-forward approach to mortgage operations.
This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, high-change environments and is passionate about improving borrower outcomes. The ideal candidate brings strong underwriting experience, solid leadership ability, and a mindset open to leveraging AI tools and new technology to simplify and modernize the mortgage process.
Lead and mentor a team of 7 underwriters while promoting a collaborative, tech-forward culture
Evaluate financial and property documentation to make sound, compliant underwriting decisions across loan types
Drive efficiency by optimizing workflows using AI-enhanced tools and proprietary platforms
Ensure loan approvals meet regulatory, agency, and investor guidelines (FHA, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, Jumbo)
Collaborate closely with sales, operations, product, and tech to identify and implement process improvements
Manage daily underwriting operations with focus on fast turn times and consistent pipeline movement
Provide ongoing training to keep the team current on technology, tools, and regulatory changes
Monitor team KPIs and performance trends, reporting insights to senior leadership
Minimum 6 years of recent mortgage underwriting experience
At least 2 years in a leadership or management role
Experience underwriting Conventional, FHA, VA, and Jumbo loans
DE and VA/SAR certifications strongly preferred (USDA or 203k a plus)
Proficient in Encompass or similar LOS platforms
Strong knowledge of agency/investor guidelines, compliance, and industry standards
Demonstrated ability to lead teams in a fast-paced, evolving environment
Tech-forward, collaborative, and enthusiastic about integrating new tools
Strong analytical and communication skills; detail-oriented and adaptable
Location: Hybrid role based in NYC — in-office Monday through Wednesday, optional remote Thursday and Friday
Salary range: $170,000 – $180,000/year
