Frontend Engineer

Hum was founded in 2019 to make rail transportation safer and smarter. Our products provide railroads, rail shippers, and railcar owners with the most advanced sensors for application like predictive railcar maintenance, live railcar weights as accurate as a scale, and next generation fleet monitoring tools.

Hum is now entering a growth phase as it seeks to meet the needs of its customers across multiple continents. Hum is looking for the right people to join our team as we work to create incredible products that modernize rail transportation.

Hum is hiring a Frontend Engineer to lead our scaling efforts. As an early hire at Hum, this role comes with the opportunity to lead our frontend team as we build it out or continue on as an individual contributor. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity for the right person.

What you’ll be doing

Intuitive Designer – Good designers are rare. At Hum you’ll need to showcase those rare skills by building intuitive applications that unlock the power of Hum’s technology for its customers. We work in an industry that’s decades behind the state of the art. Building applications for this crowd will take an understanding of how to both listen to and ignore customers at the right time.

Responsibilities

Architect and lead the development of a best-in-class frontend system.

Deploy applications across web and mobile environments.

Advance deployed device diagnostics and passive monitoring.

Implement best practices with device and system cybersecurity.

Keep up on the latest advancements in the field and incorporate them into Hum’s systems.

Ideal qualitie

5+ years of frontend development experience, ideally with web applications

.Proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+) and at least one framework: React, Vue.js, or Angular 15+

.Experience with TypeScript for type-safe, scalable code

.Solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and modern styling tools (e.g., Tailwind, Styled Components)

.Familiarity with RESTful APIs or GraphQL for fetching and displaying dynamic data

.Exposure to real-time data handling (e.g., WebSockets) or IoT-related projects is a plus

.Eye for design—translating wireframes or prototypes into polished interfaces

.Comfort with version control (Git) and agile workflows

.Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude toward learning new tech

.Bonus: Experience with IoT platforms, data visualization, or cross-functional startup environment
