Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinate and conduct environmental and safety-related training and programs for HCC employees and student workers employed by HCC.


2. Perform routine and scheduled duties as required to provide campus compliance with USEPA, MDE, OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, USDOT, City/State Fire Marshalls Office, and any other regulatory agency having jurisdiction over the college. 


3. Work in collaboration with the Facilities Department to correct deficiencies and make recommendations for action as needed to maintain regulatory compliance.


4. Maintain all records for campus life safety equipment inspections and employee safety training and provide scheduled report s to the Director of Public Safety, including training completion and equipment inspection deficiencies.


5. Perform or coordinate inspections of all lab safety and fume hood equipment and maintain all records of inspections.


6. Maintain campus records as appropriate for all campus locations of hazardous materials, and hazardous wastes. Ensure the physical Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are up to date in all required locations. Oversee the electronic SDS system on campus.


7. Conduct an annual review of the HCC Hazardous Communication Plan to ensure all requirements are being met.

 
8. Responsible for college-wide procedural plan to properly manage chemical use, storage, and disposal to ensure overall safety of the campus.


9. Performs routine inspections of chemical and hazardous material storage, and inventory management for all divisions on campus.


10. Investigate complaints, accidents, and incidents on campus to identify and unsafe working conditions. Recommend solutions to correct any unsafe working/learning environments on campus.


11. Perform routine inspections of college facilities, to ensure safe conditions and compliance with all local, state and Federal regulations.


12. Collaborate with HCC Police to ensure all special events on campus follow acceptable safety standards. Oversee crowd manager training and safety inspections.


13. Monitor and maintain all the College safety and first aid supplies to include, AED devices, Stop the Bleed kits, PPE, and other biohazard safety equipment.


14. Collect information and prepare end of year reports related to overall environmental health and safety of the College.


15. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (safety, biology/chemistry, emergency management) with two or more years of experience, or associate’s degree in a related field with at least 4 years of related experience. 

 

• Ability to train and interpret OSHA, state and local safety guidelines and regulations and make recommendations to maintain compliance.

 

• Ability to identify, recognize and provide solutions for unsafe working conditions and practices.

 

• Strong organizational skills and ability to prepare detailed reports.

 

• Ability to analyze data, set goals, determine, and implement strategies.

 

• Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

 

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in seasonal weather conditions.

 

• Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk long distances, and traverse stairs.

 

Desired Qualifications

• Experience working in higher education

 

• Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM)

 

• OSHA 30 hour for General Industry

 

• Certified safety professional (CSP)
