Job Description

Controller - Multi-Billion $ Single Family Office (Bergen County) - $200-250k

The Company:

This Bergen County, NJ based firm is a dynamic, fast-paced single-family office managing the personal wealth of a prominent family with multi-billion dollar AUM across a diversified portfolio. Their investments span private equity, hedge funds, direct operating businesses, real estate (active and passive), and complex trust structures across dozens of pass-through entities. The Principal remains highly engaged and growth-oriented, requiring a Controller who thrives in an entrepreneurial and agile environment.

The Role:

We are seeking a seasoned Controller to lead the financial operations of the family office. This individual will serve as a financial steward across all entities and investments—overseeing accounting, reporting, treasury, and tax planning, while managing a high-performing team of three Senior Accountants. This is a hands-on leadership role offering broad exposure across diverse asset classes, with significant interaction with the family and third-party advisors.

Responsibilities:

  • Full oversight of accounting operations across 40+ entities including operating businesses, investment vehicles, trusts, and personal assets.
  • Manage monthly and quarterly financial reporting, consolidations, and dashboards to provide insight into performance and liquidity.
  • Lead cash management and treasury functions, including capital calls, wire approvals, investment funding, and liquidity planning.
  • Serve as a key liaison for tax strategy and planning—model scenarios, review tax projections, and coordinate with external tax advisors (compliance work is outsourced).
  • Collaborate with the administrative team who support bill pay, expense tracking, and financial admin tasks.
  • Implement best practices and controls to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Partner closely with the Principal on financial decision-making, deal execution, and estate/trust considerations.
  • Drive process improvements and enhance financial systems; experience with SEI Archway is a plus.
  • Maintain documentation and oversee internal audit preparedness as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a Controllership or leadership role.
  • Prior experience in a family office or closely related setting (e.g., UHNW clients, multi-entity investment structure) is required.
  • Background working with complex entity structures, trusts, and diversified investments.
  • Proven ability to pivot across asset classes and business needs in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong tax literacy—capable of understanding high-level tax planning and projections, even if preparation is outsourced.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills; ability to mentor, motivate, and develop staff.
  • High level of discretion, integrity, and comfort working in a confidential, high-touch environment.
  • Familiarity with portfolio/accounting systems strongly preferred.
  • CPA is a plus but not required.

Base Salary: $200k-$250k plus bonus, 401k (with match) and additional benefits/perks.

The above salary range represents Advice's good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible base compensation range at the time of posting and is not reflective of the total compensation package, which may also include benefits, equity and other non-cash incentives.
